In 1814 he joined the Tennessee Mounted Volunteers 2nd Regiment and fought at the Battle of New Orleans. He lived in Robertson Co. Tennessee until 1843 when his wife inherited property from father in Hardeman County TN. In 1828 Nathaniel was executor of his brother William's estate.

Nathaniel married Elizabeth Day in 1814 in Robertson County, Tennessee. (Elizabeth Day was born on 16 Apr 1800 in Georgia, died on 18 Jul 1877 in Hardeman County, Tennessee and was buried in Walnut Grove Baptist Cemetery, Bolivar, Hardeman County, Tennessee.)
