(John) Michael Troutman (1771) - Jefferson Co, KY; Union Co, SC; Laurens Co, SC
I found some information on this line in The Heritage of Union County, South Carolina. Article 610 is entitled The Michael Troutman Family, contributed by Mannie Lee Edwards Mabry. The first part of the article is simply a rehash of parts of FCQ. The last few pargraphs are very interesting:
"Michael Troutman, Jr. married Mary ? and it is believed that they had at least six children: Anna, believed to have married a Young, living in Georgia in 1814; a daughter Rebecca ? married Henry A. Puckett; Catherine (Caty), born 1792, married William Humphries (See The Charles Humphries Family), died May 5, 1856 in Union County, SC; John, born 1804, died 1828, buried at Padgett's Creek Baptist Church, Union County, SC, not married; Peter Lee, born February 27, 1807 in Laurens County, SC, married Elizabeth Shawler February 18, 1835 in Bullitt County, Kentucky, died March 10, 1861 in Bullitt County, Kentucky; Caroline born 1808, died March 18, 1858 in Laurens County, SC, buried at Padgett's Creek Baptist Church, Union County, SC, not married.
In 1805, Michael purchased land in Union County, South Carolina, on Padgett's Creek, a branch of the Tyger River, where he operated a tannery. The census of 1820 and 1830 show Michael living in Union County, SC. In 1840 he moved to Laurens County, SC. In 1837, Michael's wife Mary, born 1777, had died and was buried at Padgett's Creek Baptist Church.
Upon his death January 10, 1855, Michael Troutman was buried beside his wife Mary and his son John in the Padgett's Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Daughter Caroline followed in 1858. Markers at their graves stand today, purchase of which was provided for in the will of Caroline, probated in Laurens County, South Carolina.
Cathrine (Caty) Troutman, daughter of Michael and Mary Troutman, was born in 1792 in Kentucky. About 1800, she migrated with her parents to South Carolina. She married William Humphries, son of Charles and Elizabeth Humphries. Caty died May 5, 1856, aged 64 years, and was buried in the Polly Young Cemetery, Union County, South Carolina. (See The Charles Humphries Family)"
Michael Troutman was in the 1800 tax list of Jefferson Co, KY. He was in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 Censuses of Union Co, SC. He was in the 1840 Census of Laurens Co, SC. In the 1850 Census of Laurens Co, SC, he is listed as Michael Troutman (79, SC) with his daughter Caroline (42, SC). Note that his birthplace is incorrect; he was born in MD. See Trautmann/Troutman Early Records in America for census details.
No luck in finding Michael's daughters Anna (Troutman) Young or Rebecca (Troutman) Puckett. In the 1850 Census, Michael's son Peter Lee Troutman was in Bullitt Co, KY. Michael's daughter Catherine (Troutman) Humphries was in the 1850 Census of Union Co, SC (ntl, roll 859, p.33): William Humphries, 65, SC; Katharine Humphries, 56, KY; 4 children born in SC.
Note: According to trees published by Maria Troutman and Bob Alvey, Michael's daughter, Anna Troutman, married John R. Shoemaker and had several children with him. I found this Anna in the 1850, 1860, and 1880 Censuses: FC 1850 IN Clinton, Jackson Twp, p.448 (census taken 7 Nov 1850) - Leonard Shoemaker, 21, IN; Mariah Shoemaker, 18, IN; James Shoemaker, 19, IN; Newton Shoemaker, 17, IN; Anna Smith, 56, KY; Amelia A Chenoweth, 6, IN. FC 1860 MO Linn, T60 R20, p.728 - Leonard Shoemaker, 30, IN; Mariah, 28, IL; Ann Shoemaker, 2, MO; Virginia Shoemaker, 3m, MO; Anna Shoemaker, 67, KY FC 1860 MO Linn, T59 R20, p.722, p.722 - Newton Shoemaker, 29, IN; Rebecca L Shoemaker, 27, IN; Ida Ann Shoemaker, 1, MO FC 1880, MN, Lincoln, Blue Earth, p.420 - C Leonard Shoemaker, Head, 50, IN KY KY; L Maria Shoemaker, Wife, 48, IL -- SC; Anna Shoemaker, Mother (divorced), 87, KY VA VA; Virginia B Shoemaker, Dau, 20, MO IN IL; William N Shoemaker, Son, 18, IN, IN, IL; Vilinda J Shoemaker, Dau, 16, IN IN IL; Inda M Shoemaker, Dau, 15, IN IN IL; Austin C Shoemaker, Son, 12, IN IN IL; Benjamin F Shoemaker, Son, 9, MN IN IL
There is a marriage record in Clinton Co, IN for Mrs. Anna Shoemaker to George Smith on 3 Oct 1850. She was listed with son Leonard as Anna Smith on 7 Nov 1850. She apparently divorced Mr. Smith and reverted to the Shoemaker name.
I also found these earlier census listings for John R Shoemaker, though I did not look at the actual census records: FC 1840 IN, Clinton, ntl, p.362 - John R Shoemaker FC 1830 IN, Bartholomew, ntl, p.206 - John R Shoemaker FC 1820 IN, Jackson, ntl, p.268 - John Shoemaker
In 1840 and 1830, he was the only John R Shoemaker in Indiana. In 1820, he is probably the John Shoemaker listed in Jackson County which is today adjacent to Bartholomew County (which was formed in 1821). John R. Shoemaker and Anna had a daughter named Mahala. Since they were living in Bartholomew Co, IN in 1830, and Greenup Troutman (1811), son of Peter Troutman (1769), married a Mahala Shoemaker in Bartholomew Co, IN on 15 Feb 1832, the Mahala Shoemaker who Greenup married was likely the daughter of John R and Anna Shoemaker. There is a marriage record in Bartholomew Co, IN for Leonard C Shoemaker to Maria L Hook on 27 May 1850, so Leonard apparently traveled back to Bartholomew Co from Clinton Co to marry. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Troutman Families Of Kentucky by Evelyn Crady Adams
states that he was baptised on 14 Feb 1771. In which case, the birthdate would be suspect.
John married Mary before 1792. (Mary was born in 1777, died on 22 Sep 1837 and was buried in Padgett's Creek Baptist Church, Union County, South Carolina.)
