From an internet message board:

First, I do not know the parents of Francis Coomes (1726) who married
Charity Woods. He came to Nelson Co.
from NC where some other Virginia "Combs'" had moved. He was Catholic
and thought to have been born in Md.

Second, the reason I know that this Francis Coomes is not the son of
Thomas and Elizabeth Wharton Coomes of
Charles Co., Md is twofold.

One; In his will dated Aug. 29, 1752, Thomas Coomes wrote,

"Item, It is also my will & desire that my four youngest sons Joseph and
William and Francis Ignatius and Walter
Coomes that when they arrive at the age of eighteen years old that...."

This indicates that Francis Ignatius Coomes was born after 1734. If the
order that they are listed makes any
difference then I would est. abt. 1740.

Two; Francis Ignatius Coomes, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Wharton
Coomes is known to have married first,
Cassandra Culver. This Francis dies in 1817 in Hardy Co. Va, (now WV).
In his will dated Feb. 10, 1816 he names
his children by his first wife as Elizabeth Bean, Drusilla Jarboe,
Francis Ignatius Coomes Jr., Henry Coomes and
Joshua Coomes. He also named his present wife "Nancy" and "our" children
as Trecy, Cassa, Letty, Pyos,
Christene, Charles and Peter Combs and the one unborn. (Francis' mother
was Elizabeth, Cassandra's father was
Henry, and she had a sister Drusilla, Joshua was also a Coomes family
name)
