bullet  Marriage Notes:

April 3, 2002:
The 1891 British census was conducted in about April. The column headings listed below were on every page, but I have listed them as numbers here to save space. There were also columns labelled "No. of Schedule;" "Road, Street, &c., and No. or Name of House" and "Rooms with one or more windows" which I have listed at the beginning of each entry as there was only one entry per family in each column. The columns headed "Gaelic or G. & E." and "Whether: 1. Deaf and Dumb. 2. Blind. 3. Lunatic, Imbecile, or Idiot" rarely had entries for any of the Coubroughs. When they did, this is noted in the "notes" section at the end of each entry.

1. Name and Surname of each Person.
2. Relation to Head of Family
3. Conditon as to Marriage
4. Age (last birthday) [There are separarte sub-columns here for males and females; indicated in transcripts by M or F along with the age.]
5. Profession or Occupation
6. Employer
7. Employed
8. Neither Employer nor Employed but working on own account
9. Where born [usually given in the format County, Parish]

Myrna's Note: I couldn't make out the last word in the name of the street. It looks like it might start with a "G" and the last two letters (of 6 ?) seem to be the same, either "e" or "l." The entry for James's occupation had the notation "(Marine Insurer) after it but there wasn't room to put it in the column here.

The 1901 Census asked pretty much the same questions as the one before, except there were only two columns for occupation instead of three. In my transcription of the 1901 record, the first five columns are the same; column 6 is now "Employer, Worker, or on Own Account," column 7 is "If Working at Home," and Column 8 is "Where Born" in the same form as before. Anthony and Margaret have moved to Blanefield House, which was apparently slightly bigger house than Parklea. All of their children have left home and Anthony and Margaret are rattling around in a 25-room house with only the servants for company. No one spoke Gaelic, or was Deaf and Dumb, Blind, Lunatic, Idiot or Feeble-minded.
