Henry Gunterman was first married to Margaretha Brenck, probably about 1759 since daughter, Susanna, was born July 10, 1760 in Lower Smithfield, Pennsylvania. Handwritten records of Domine Thomas Romeyn, found in Volume V, 1913, of the collections of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, Entry #169 state: "hendreck konreman - dau. Susanna, Margriet Brenck."
As son, Peter was born about 1765, in Newton, New Jersey, it is presumed that Henry made the move from Pennsylvania to New Jersey sometime between 1760 and 1765. Sons, Jacob and Henry Jr. were born in Newton, New Jersey in 1765 and 1767 respectively. Daughters, Mary and Barbara, were also born in Newton; Mary in 1771 and Barbara sometime before the birth of John in 1775.
Unfortunately, we have no records as to what happened to Henry's first wife, Margaret, or when. She could have been the mother of the first five children, but we know that Henry married Catherine at least by 1775 because of the birth records of their son, John.
We find Henry and Conrad, along with brother, Peter listed in the 1774 New Jersey Rateables in New Jersey, Sussex County. Henry owned fourteen acres with seven horses and cattle; Conrad, 50 acres with four horses and cattle; and Peter with 50 acres with 16 horses and cattle. The "Rateables" are tax lists and do not give number of people in the households.
D.A.R. records indicate that Henry was a Captain in the New Jersey Militia during the American Revolution.
Henry married Catherine (Catrin) Cassie.
Henry next married Margreth Brenk.
